Why Mountain Goats Are Undefeated, Actually
Okay so I’ve been thinking about this for a while and I need to just say it: mountain goats are genuinely the coolest animals and I will not be taking questions.
Like, have you actually looked at them? They’re these absolutely unhinged little chaos demons with the energy of someone who just discovered they can do parkour. They’re literally just climbing up the sides of cliffs. For fun. For sport. They’re built different and they know it.
And the thing that gets me is they’re so committed to the bit. They’ll be scaling a vertical wall of rock and you can just feel their main character energy from a distance. They don’t care that gravity exists. They’ve decided it doesn’t apply to them and honestly I respect the confidence more than I can even explain. Like that’s not just bravery, that’s a whole philosophy.
I went down a mountain goat rabbit hole a few weeks ago — which, yes, is exactly the kind of thing I do on a Tuesday night — and I learned that their hooves are actually specially designed with hard outer edges and softer inner pads that grip the rock like little built-in climbing shoes. Nature just said “here you go, have Nikes, you’re welcome.” Evolution really said let’s make an animal that treats a cliff face like a staircase and gave zero further explanation.
Also can we talk about the horns? Both males and females have them, they use them to spar and assert dominance, and they’re just very elegant and matter of fact about the whole thing. No drama. Just: here are my horns, here is my cliff, let’s not make this weird.
And okay, they’re kind of cute in a strange way? Those little rectangular pupils, the permanent “I know something you don’t” expression. They look like they’re in on some cosmic joke and the rest of us are just missing it. Honestly reminds me of a good chess player — that calm, slightly unreadable face while they’re three moves ahead of everyone around them.
I think if I had to be any animal, mountain goat would be it. Living life with zero regard for what anyone thinks, thriving in impossible situations, just vibing on a cliff somewhere above everything. That’s not just the dream — that’s the whole game.
